Mason writes to Dallas, the U.S. Minister to England, providing him with the political news of the day. He attacks Stephen A. Douglas as "that little agitator" and continues with "your friend from Philadelphia," James Buchanan, whose "halfway measures in Kansas with Walker to eke them out" have disaffected the South. Mason gives a long account on the illegal capture of William Walker by a Capt. Pauling in Nicaragua. He criticizes the current U.S. Cabinet and refers to the Secretary of State, Lewis Cass, as "a mere cypher."
